How Many Pavers Do I Need?

Using simple area calculation, you can finally stop wondering, "How many pavers do I need?". First, we'll teach you the right way to estimate the area of the ground you need to cover, and then estimate the amount of pavers needed. Then, we'll teach you how to divide that by the area of one paver or the pattern made up of multiple pavers.

After you figure that out, you just have to ensure it's a safe project. Just follow these steps to calculate the total amount of pavers you'll need to purchase to finish your dream project. Installation is a breeze with Outdoor Escapes, so consider working with us to make your property one-of-a-kind!

Calculate the Total Area of your Project

Calculating the amount of pavers needed depends on the shape of your project and whether the area is regular or irregular.

Is it a simple geometric form or more of an organic shape? Is it square, rectangular, circular, or something else? Let's go over how to calculate the area of regular shapes first.

For example, for a rectangular area, simply multiply its width and length together. For a circular area, you'll want to know the radius. Raise this number to the power of two, and then multiply that figure by Pi.

If you're working with a project area that's irregular, mentally break it up into rectangles of varying sizes. Calculate the areas of those with the math above, and then add them together for your total area. Don't worry about being exact because you only need an estimate.

Use the Area of a Single Paver and Patterns

This part is easy, but before you can get this figure, you need to know what you want. Pavers are available in a plethora of formats, and you can install them in a variety of beautiful patterns.

Take some time to look at our outdoor living options, for example, and then narrow it down to a few choices. If you've already done this, you're halfway there!

If you're going to use the same surface area paver throughout, then decide which size you want and then calculate the surface area of one. Get some inspiration for your pattern choice from friends, books, magazines, TV, the internet, or travel. Patterns using the same size and shape stones include the following:

  • Checkerboard
  • Brickwork Vertical Narrow
  • Stack Bond
  • Basketweave
  • Running Bond
  • Herringbone

Here are some multi-stone patterns to get your creativity flowing:

  • 5 Stone
  • 5 Stone Random
  • I Pattern
  • 3 Stone I Pattern
  • Palazzo
  • Marseilles
  • Hopscotch

If you want a pattern that uses two or more different size paving stones, divide your total project area by the surface area of your paver or repeating pattern. You'll want to add 10% more to this amount so that you have extras. This is to compensate for safety issues like cracks or brakes that can happen over time.

Buy 20% extra if the pattern doesn't follow a straight-edge line. This type of plan will require cutting away some of the stone along the edges. This is common for projects that use complex patterns or highly irregular project shapes. Do this by taking the total amount of pavers and then adding 0.2 of the original total.

Paver Calculator

Once you have your measurements ready, plug them into this handy paver calculator powered by OMNI. Have fun using it to figure out hypothetical plans to know what can fit into your space and budget. You'll be one step closer to throwing that outdoor party to wow your friends and family!

Paver Installation Is a Big Job

In theory, installation can seem easy, but it actually involves a whole lot more than buying pavers. There is a whole lot of digging involved, and leveling can be tricky. You have to prepare the gravel and sand base, lay the pavers, add the joint sand, and then seal the project.

All of this takes more time than people usually expect when they start something like this on their own. In order to have a patio that lasts as long as it should with less repair and replacement, hire Outdoor Escapes. We have the experience, precision, and skill to do it right and save you headaches.
